It’s ‘DuckTales’ meets ‘American Dad!’
An animated (adult) half-hour sitcom.
When the slick duck, Hunter Johnson, grew up, he was bullied because his family was poor. Now he’s the richest duck in the pond.
Imagine an animated comedy series where animals in Central Park, NY, are anthropomorphized and live lives similar to humans. They have jobs like we do, go through existential problems, and comfort-eat when they’re upset like we do.
‘Uptown Ducks’ is a story about the now wealthy duck, Hunter Johnson, who grew up in poverty and always wanted more out of life than what the small pond he grew up in could give him.
Hunter now navigates life with a wife who spends all his hard-earned money, a preachy, socialist daughter, a socially awkward son, a frail old dad who thinks wealth makes you soft, and internal insecurities about never having enough.

Hunter (30s) is one slick son of a duck. Hunter is a salesman and a damn good one at that. His boss and best friend Kevin (human) has given him a job in the big city. But no one at work can know Hunter is a duck. Luckily, as long as Hunter wears a disguise (a suit and tie) humans can’t tell he’s a duck.
Hunter lives in a sweet mansion with his duck family of five in a pond in Central Park. He strives to become the world’s first duck billionaire which proves tricky when you have to juggle ambition with family responsibilities.
Hunter may appear confident and cool on the surface but suffers from insecurities of never being enough. He has a temper and a very fragile ego, making him overly defensive and prone to impulsive decisions when his image or authority is challenged.
Other ducks in the pond think Hunter is crazy for venturing into the big city for work. To animals in Central Park, the big city is a horrifying and mystical place.
Hunter was bullied growing up for living in poverty with his dad. This triggered Hunter’s relentless ambition. He started wanting more out of life than the small pond he grew up in could provide him. He started having dreams of getting a job in the big city with humans and make more money than any duck ever had.
Hunter’s defining quality is his ambitious stubbornness. This is both his biggest strength and his biggest weakness. Hunter has the big house and the great job because of it. But it also drives him to neglect meaningful relationships and his own well-being.
However, when everything is said and done, Hunter always comes to realize that his family is the most important thing in his world.
Penny (16) is Hunter’s daughter and what some of us cheeky writers call “the voice of reason”. Penny is quite the little socialist and wildly against her family’s wealthy lifestyle. She begrudges her parents for swimming in riches while the less fortunate worry about where their next meal may come from.
Penny is caring and nurturing, explaining why she wants to help the less fortunate. She is more of a mother to her family than her own mother to be honest.
Being young, and pretty, Penny isn’t taken seriously in her political views by many, if any. However, Penny’s a clever and excellent debater. Her capitalist dad, Hunter, loses his mind when he can’t counter argue Penny’s points.
Penny cannot keep her mouth shut when it comes to any form of injustice. But as it turns out, being preachy and judgmental isn’t a fantastic way to make friends.
Besides her dysfunctional family at home, Penny deals with the classic high school teenage girl problems. Love, grades, awkward menstrual timings, etc.
Sammy (12) is a monotone and socially awkward, little dude. What he says is often wildly out of place which can lead to unfortunate but comedic predicaments.
Sammy is picked on in school. But wait! Don’t feel bad for him yet! It totally rolls off Sammy’s back as he lacks the social ques and awareness to understand the mean-spirited bullying. Sammy is quick to fire back at the bullies often leaving them stunned and lost for words.
Sammy’s greatest inspiration is his dad, Hunter, and Sammy wants to grow up to be just like him. Sammy will defend his dad’s honor at all costs and does not appreciate it when his sister, Penny, speaks ill of him.
Sammy is given bad advice by his friends, his parents, and… really every adult he talks to. Unfortunately, little impressionable Sammy only knows bad advice is bad when it’s too late. The only person who seems to give valuable advice to Sammy is his sister, Penny.

Dixie (30s) is Hunter’s hot ass duck wife who can’t get enough of the rich life. What’s more important than maintaining an image of high status to Dixie? Nothing, duh! (perhaps wine)
Beneath the superficial surface, Dixie is a lost and lonely housewife. She spends a ton of Hunter’s hard earned money (against his will) on new ridiculous hobbies that she’ll abandon the next day. She can’t seem to find her purpose in life. Work? Pfff. Forgetaboutit.
Dixie is not very suited to be a mother. She gets pissy at Penny for shaming her for enjoying the finer things in life while people in the streets starve. Every time her son, Sammy, comes to her with serious problems, she just pinches his cheeks and says he’s “so cute I could eat you up!”.

Gramps (60s) is Hunter’s frail ole wheelchaired dad. He’s as bitter as arugula and that type of grandparent who always thinks he knows best.
Gramps comes from harder times and is of the belief that the comfortable and easy life of the wealthy “makes ya soft ya wuss!”. Gramps raised Hunter in extreme poverty. Hunter still holds a small grudge against his dad for this. Hunter never felt like his dad made any attempt to break free and make a better life for his family.
Hunter feels like he has a lot to prove to his dad – that he’s not weak and that his current lifestyle is better than the poverty-stricken one he grew up in.
Kevin (30s) is a human whose dad owns the global marketing agency, Humanat Digital. Kevin is the sales director in said agency. However, Kevin is far from capable of running the sales department on his own and has lots of help from his best friend, Hunter… in secret.
Kevin grew up without facing any adversity because of his absurdly rich father. He is incredibly incompetent and has no idea how to do even the simplest tasks without the help of money or an assistant.
Kevin wants to live a “normal” life – find a wife and start a family. This proves tricky for someone who can’t operate a toaster. Hunter is Kevin’s guardian angel. Kevin helps Hunter achieve his billionaire goals and Hunter helps Kevin live life like a normal person.
Kevin often hangs out in the pond as if it’s a spa.

‘Uptown Ducks’ takes place in a world where all animals can speak and are, to certain degrees, anthropomorphized.
Our stories mostly take place in the Johnson family’s house in the pond in Central Park, at Hunter’s job in the big vibrant New York city (you can smell the aroma of pizza already, can’t ya?), and at Penny and Sammy’s schools.
In Central Park, animals are a lot like humans. They have jobs, existential problems, talk the way we do, and watch the same bad sitcoms on repeat like we do. Most animals in Central Park are afraid to venture out into the big city. The animal life mostly remains contained in the park and interacts with humans as little as possible.
But not Hunter. Hunter roams freely around the big city and interacts with humans on a daily basis. Ducks in the pond condemn Hunter’s success. They think he’s crazy for associating with humans and roaming the big city. “That’s not how a duck is supposed to live. “
In ‘Uptown Ducks’, humans are generally pretty dumb. When Hunter puts on a suit, humans can’t tell he’s a duck. No, I’m serious.
Ducks in the pond live in grass huts except for Hunter who lives in a wooden, overgrown mansion full of “human technology”.
For the most part, the pond is a peaceful and idyllic place. But the ducks in the pond are at times subject to threats like, wild cats, hawks and falcons, litter and pollution, and of course… humans.
It’s a fundamental human belief that “the grass is always greener on the other side”. We are hardwired as humans (and probably as ducks too) to want what we don’t already have and to think there’s a better life waiting for us. That what we already have isn’t enough.
‘Uptown Ducks’ deals with the theme of “obsession leads to destruction”. When Hunter strives to want more to uphold his image, he forgets his responsibilities as a father. When Dixie strives to seek external validation, she forgets to find internal happiness and meaning. When Sammy tries to be like his dad at all costs, he forgets that he can be whoever he wants to be. And so on.
Ultimately, I want to tell a story that began like how I felt myself growing up — trapped in a “small pond” and wanting more out of life than where I grew up could give me. That’s the story of the duck, Hunter Johnson, and where that made him end up.
‘Uptown Ducks’ deals with satirical comedy about societal norms and expectations. It uses humor and social commentary to critique and parody Western society.
